Why you should learn Praying Mantis Kung Fu
The praying mantis insect, with its quivering intensity and aptitude for cannibalism, is hardly the model of a "gentle" kung fu style. Thus, one should not be surprised to learn that praying mantis kung fu, or Tang Lang in Chinese, is perhaps the most merciless kung fu styles of all.
History
Praying Mantis Kung Fu was founded by Wang Lang, a legendary martial artist of the Ming Dynasty who challenged a high monk from the Shaolin Temple. Initially defeated, Wang remained undeterred.
One day while resting after his defeat, he observed the movements of a praying mantis fighting a cicada, and was inspired by the trapping and seizing movements of the mantis in capturing its larger prey. Wang noted the upright and rigid body of the mantis, and the cutting movements of its sickle. He studiously prodded the mantis to learn its moves, and combined these with the eighteen styles of kung fu he had already mastered to create praying mantis kung fu which he used to avenge his defeat at the Shaolin Temple.
Praying Mantis Kung Fu
Praying Mantis Kung Fu imitates the trapping movements of a mantis to maim its prey. There are many styles of Praying Mantis Kung Fu fighting today, such as Seven Stars, Closed Door, Eight Step, Tai Chi and Six Harmonies. The Seven Stars school, the original style founded by Wang Lang, remains the most popular in China to date.
Mantis hand techniques are characterized by the Mantis claw, a type of hook formed with the hands. This is a grabbing motion that derives all of its power from your wrist and the forearm. The footwork of Praying Mantis is based on the "monkey step". This is a unique type of balanced footwork that allows you to move easily in any direction quickly.
