In contrast to the popular conception of Shaolin Kung Fu as a hard, external style, at the level of the Arhat Form, the hands of the Shaolin fighter appear hard yet they are soft - The strike comes in at unlikely angles aimed ferociously at soft targets. The step is like that of a drunken master- outwardly solid yet highly agile and deceptive. A punch actually incorporates multiple angles for countering and attacking.
When practicing the techniques of this form, the practitioner should bear in mind the Zen mantra that "what appears to be insubstantial actually has meaning, and what appears to be substantial actually may be meaningless". Not every punch is really a punch, and not every feign is really just that only.
