Why you should learn Fujian White Crane Kung Fu

Fujian White Crane Kung Fu is a short range style that attacks the opponent with powerful tremor-like techniques. The style emphasizes:-

  • Chi development: Such as the breathing and meditation techniques such as those contained in San Zan (Three Battles)
  • Using the mind to drive Chi, and using the Chi to drive the strike i.e. the focus is not on brute physical strength
  • Development of flexible, short range hand techniques: Fujian White Crane fights at very close distances using the Tremor Force (Dan Dou Jing in Mandarin). This is the explosive energy released from releasing the tension in the wrists and forearms at short range

History

Fujian White Crane was created by Fang Xi Liang. Fang was the daughter of a skilled monk of the Southern Shaolin Temple, Fang Wai Shi.

During the 17 th Century, the Southern Shaolin Temple was a base of insurrection by the Chinese hoping to overthrow the Manchu Government (of the Qing Dynasty) and restore the previous Ming Dynasty. In retaliation, the Qing Dynasty razed the temple to the ground. Fang Wai Shi escaped to a temple in Fujian Province, and eventually settled down in Fujian and had a daughter, Fang Xi Liang to whom he passed on his martial arts skills.

One day, while Fang Xi Liang was hanging out the washing she had to chase away a crane. The crane parried her efforts and even struck back. Fang Xi Liang was impressed by the crane¡¦s behavior and over a period of time studied its movements and incorporated its techniques to create her own martial arts, Fujian White Crane. Fang Xi Liang eventually married and settled down in Yong Chun, thus her style was also know as Yong Chun White Crane.

Fujian White Crane is not related to Tibetan White Crane, the Shaolin Crane Form or the Tiger Crane form of Hung Gar. There are at least three other "Crane" styles that are being taught in the West:-

  • Tibetan White Crane Kung Fu - This is suited for people with long arms and legs. You feign a lot whilst attacking. There are also lots of high kicks involved.

  • The Shaolin Crane Form, which is a member of the Five Animals Form in mainstream Shaolin Kung Fu. The Shaolin Five Animals Form is one of the most important forms in Shaolin Kung Fu, as each animal form is cleverly devised to round out your physical attributes as a Shaolin fighter. The animals and the attributes they improve are Dragon (soul), Tiger (bone structure), Leopard (strength), Snake (Chi) and Crane (spirit).

  • Tiger Crane kung fu, a form from Hung Gar Kung Fu. Properly translated as The Tiger Crane Combination Set, this form is an important Hung Gar Kung Fu routine which trains you to attack with the ferocity of a tiger, and move with the grace of the crane.
