Why you should learn White Crane Kung Fu

White Crane is a short range style that attacks the opponent with powerful tremor-like techniques. The style emphasizes:

  • Chi development: Such as the breathing and meditation techniques contained in San Zan
  • Using the mind to drive Chi, and using the Chi to drive the strike i.e. the focus is not on brute physical strength
  • Development of flexible, short range hand techniques: Fujian White Crane fights at very close distances using the Tremor Force (Dan Dou Jing in Mandarin). This is the explosive energy released from releasing tension in the wrists and forearms at short range

History

White Crane was created by Fang Xi Liang. Fang was the daughter of a skilled monk of the Southern Shaolin Temple, Fang Wai Shi.

During the 17th Century, China was occupied by the Manchurians who had overthrown the Ming Dynasty of the Chinese and established the Qing Dynasty. The Southern Shaolin Temple was a base of insurrection by the Chinese hoping to restore Chinese rule, and was effectively a training ground for the rebel forces fighting the imperial government.

In retaliation, the Qing Dynasty razed the temple to the ground. Fang Wai Shi escaped to a temple in Fujian Province. Fang eventually settled down in Fujian and had a daughter, Fang Xi Liang, to whom he passed on his martial arts skills.

One day, while Fang Xi Liang was hanging out the laundry she had to chase away a crane who picked at the clothes. The crane parried her efforts and even struck back against her. Fang Xi Liang was impressed by the crane's behavior and came to realize that its techniques could be helpful in combat. Fang Xi Liang committed herself to studying the crane's behavior over a period of time and eventually incorporated its techniques to her own skills to create the style known as White Crane Kung Fu today.
