Who is Zhang Guo Lao?
The most eccentric of the Eight Immortals, Zhang Guo Lao is a reclusive Taoist druid who lived at the time of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 to 907). His specialty was potion making, through which he discovered the elixir of life.
After he achieved immortality, Zhang rode a celestial mule, which could allegedly ride the winds and travel a thousand miles a day, to help people in distress. In Taoist paintings, Zhang is depicted either with or sitting on his mule.
